Maya Cabrinha makes their way to the second floor of the Bhakti Center to lead a group of thirteen in a discussion about The Artist’s Way. Each week, participants read two chapters, complete the book’s exercises, and take themselves on an “artist’s date.”Every week, residents are asked to write a word or two that describes how they’re feeling today. Using crayons, Maya fills out an index card to express how she feels. To the left, Puspa, one of the artist residents, reaches for a colored marker to fill out her card. To the right, Alexia, one of the other residents, fills out her own card.Residents fill out their cards.Today, Maya is unsure of how exactly she feels.Maya talks with artist resident Alexia Hackshaw about their feelings cards. In the background, Maya has put on a video of someone playing a handpan drum to set a calming atmosphere.Sensing some pent-up emotions this week, Maya invites residents to step outside and scream in the broad daylight of the Lower East Side. Some residents look nervous; Puspsa (right) covers her mouth, anticipating what’s about to happen.More anticipation…Alexia is signaling for me to join.Maya flips through their copy of The Artist’s Way to share something that she read to the group. A vegan cookie handmade by residency co-runner, Tulsi, lies in the bowl below.
